How to Protect Your Collection from Dust, Sunlight & Damage
Share
🛡️ Dust, UV light, and humidity are quietly doing damage to your collection right now. Here's how to stop them.
Here's something nobody tells you when you start collecting: your pieces are in a slow, constant battle with the environment around them. Dust settles on paint. UV light fades colours. Humidity warps cardboard and clouds acrylic. And none of it is dramatic: it happens gradually, invisibly, until one day you pick up a figure you've had for two years and notice the paint has dulled or the box has yellowed.
The good news: protecting your collection properly is neither complicated nor expensive. You just need to know what you're protecting against.
😤 The four enemies of your collection
🌫️ Dust
The most common threat. Dust is mildly abrasive. When you wipe it off a painted figure without proper care, you can dull the finish over time. Dust also holds moisture, which accelerates yellowing on plastic and cardboard. Clear acrylic cases are your best defence.
☀️ UV light and direct sunlight
Direct sunlight is probably the most damaging thing for a display collection. It fades painted figures, yellows white and clear plastics, and degrades card quality over time. Even indirect natural light causes slow UV damage. Keep your display away from windows, or use UV-filtering film on nearby glass.
💧 Humidity and temperature swings
High humidity warps cardboard boxes and causes the silver card backing inside Pokémon and other TCG cards to delaminate. Basements and bathrooms are bad storage environments for this reason. Temperature swings (hot in summer, cold in winter) stress plastics over time. A stable room temperature is ideal.
🖐️ Handling and accidents
Oils from your hands transfer to painted surfaces and can cause discolouration over years of handling. Figures without a case also get knocked over, scratched, or chipped especially if they're in a high-traffic area. The less your rarest pieces are handled, the better.
How to protect your collection properly
🔲 Use acrylic display cases: your best all-round defence
A clear acrylic case blocks dust, reduces handling, and creates a physical barrier against accidental knocks. It doesn't block UV (no acrylic does without a specialist coating), but it eliminates dust and handling risks in one move. For most collectors, this is the single most effective protective investment.
Shop display cases →📦 Stackable magnetic boxes for stored pieces
Not everything can be on display all the time — and that's fine. Pieces that are in storage should still be properly protected. Stackable display boxes with magnetic closures keep stored figures dust-free, scratch-free, and easy to access when you want to rotate your display.

Use this to audit your current setup
✦ Are your most valuable pieces in a closed case or covered display?
✦ Is your display away from direct sunlight and windows?
✦ Do you have a microfibre cloth for dusting (no paper towels: they scratch)?
✦ Are stored pieces in proper boxes, not loose in a bin or bag?
✦ Is your display in a room with a reasonably stable temperature?
✦ Are your trading cards in sleeves or hard cases (not loose in a pile)?
